Project Overview
MB Millwork completed a kitchen renovation in Rutherford, NJ, for a 13'4" x 14'1" kitchen that needed a better layout and more usable storage for everyday cooking. We installed shop-built custom cabinetry in a warm ivory finish, added a 7'2" white oak island with seating for three, and finished the room with quartz countertops, a full-height handmade-look ceramic backsplash behind the range, and soft-close hardware throughout. The kitchen now feels more open, with cleaner lines and a more practical workflow from the sink to the range to the prep area.
The Problem
Before the renovation, the Rutherford kitchen had aging oak cabinets, worn laminate counters, and a peninsula that made the main walkway feel tight. The corner storage was awkward to reach, and the upper cabinets stopped below the ceiling, which left the room feeling dated and short on storage. The homeowners wanted a brighter kitchen with a more functional layout and a cleaner finish.
The Challenge
The space included a soffit over part of the sink wall and a side doorway near the refrigerator run, so cabinet sizing and island placement had to be planned carefully. We also needed to add seating without crowding the path into the dining area.
Our Solution
We began with a free 3D design consultation and mapped out a layout that improved storage while keeping the room comfortable to move through. Our shop fabricated the cabinetry in Lyndhurst with plywood construction, painted shaker fronts, and full-extension drawers, while the white oak island added warmth and extra prep space. We completed the kitchen with quartz countertops, a full-height backsplash behind the range, and custom trim around the soffit and openings so the whole room felt built in.
The Result
The finished kitchen feels brighter, more balanced, and much easier to use day to day. The ivory cabinets lighten the room, the oak island gives it a strong focal point, and the quartz surfaces provide a durable workspace that is easy to maintain. The fitted trim and backsplash details help the space look finished without feeling overdone.
