Project Overview
MB Millwork recently completed a kitchen renovation in East Rutherford, NJ, for a 12' x 14' kitchen that needed better storage and a more workable layout. We installed shop-built custom cabinets in a soft dove gray finish, paired them with a 6' white oak island, honed quartz countertops, and a handcrafted-look ceramic backsplash. The homeowners now have a kitchen that feels brighter, moves better, and gives them more room for cooking and gathering.
The Problem
Before the renovation, the kitchen had dated maple cabinets, a small peninsula, and not enough counter space for meal prep. The corner storage was hard to reach, and the darker finishes made the room feel tighter than it really was. The homeowners wanted a cleaner look and a layout that worked better for everyday use.
The Challenge
The space had a low soffit over the sink wall and a narrow opening to the dining room, so the cabinet heights and island size had to be planned carefully. The homeowners also wanted a seating area without crowding the main walkway.
Our Solution
We created a 3D layout and built the cabinetry in our Lyndhurst shop to get the fit and proportions right. The design used painted maple perimeter cabinets, a white oak island with deep drawers, soft-close hardware, and 3 cm quartz countertops with subtle veining. We also added a full-height backsplash and custom trim pieces to clean up the transitions around the soffit and openings.
The Result
The finished kitchen feels more open, more organized, and easier to move through. The mix of soft gray cabinets and warm wood accents gives the room a balanced look, while the quartz and backsplash tie everything together with a clean finish. The new storage and island space made the kitchen much more practical for daily routines.

Client Outcome
The homeowners now use the kitchen for weekday dinners, weekend baking, and hosting family without feeling cramped. They especially like having a real prep zone at the island and better storage for small appliances.
