Project Overview
MB Millwork recently completed a kitchen design project in Lyndhurst, NJ, for a 12' x 14' kitchen that needed a cleaner layout and better storage for everyday use. We created a custom plan with shop-built cabinetry in a soft white finish, a 7' stained oak island, quartz countertops, and a full-height tile backsplash to tie everything together. The finished kitchen now feels brighter, easier to move through, and much more organized for cooking and family time.
The Problem
Before the project, the Lyndhurst kitchen had older builder-grade cabinets, limited drawer storage, and a narrow work area between the sink and range. The room also felt dark because the finishes were worn and the upper cabinets stopped short of the ceiling, leaving a lot of unused space. The homeowners wanted a more practical layout without changing the footprint too much.
The Challenge
The kitchen had a short return wall by the refrigerator and an awkward soffit over the sink run, which made standard cabinet sizing difficult. The homeowners also wanted seating at the island, so we had to balance storage, circulation, and everyday comfort in a compact room.
Our Solution
We started with a free 3D design consultation and built a layout that maximized each wall without crowding the walkways. The cabinetry was fabricated in our Lyndhurst shop with plywood boxes, soft-close hinges and drawer slides, and painted maple doors for a clean, durable finish. We paired the perimeter cabinets with a stained oak island, quartz tops, and a full-height ceramic backsplash to keep the room cohesive and easy to maintain.
The Result
The completed kitchen has a more open feel, with better storage, longer countertop runs, and a central island that works for prep and casual meals. The soft white cabinetry brightens the room, while the oak island adds warmth and gives the space a finished, custom look. Every detail fits the room cleanly, including the areas around the soffit and refrigerator wall.
