Project Overview
MB Millwork recently finished a kitchen design project in East Rutherford, NJ, for a 12' x 15' kitchen that needed a smarter layout and a more polished finish. We created a shop-built custom design with painted shaker cabinets in warm white, a 6'6" walnut island, quartz countertops, and a simple ceramic backsplash that kept the room bright without feeling plain. The finished kitchen now has better storage, a larger prep zone, and a cleaner look that fits the home well.
The Problem
Before the project, the East Rutherford kitchen had older oak cabinets, a cramped work triangle, and a peninsula that broke up the main walking path. The laminate counters were worn, the corner storage was awkward, and the room felt darker than it should have for the amount of natural light it got. The homeowners wanted a more practical layout with better storage and a fresher finish.
The Challenge
The kitchen had a low soffit above the sink wall and a side door near the refrigerator run, which made cabinet sizing and island placement tricky. The homeowners also wanted seating at the island, so we had to keep the circulation open while adding usable prep space.
Our Solution
We started with a free 3D design consultation and built a layout that made better use of each wall without crowding the room. The cabinetry was fabricated in our Lyndhurst shop with plywood boxes, soft-close hardware, and painted shaker doors, while the walnut island was built with deep drawers and a durable quartz top. We also added a full-height backsplash behind the range and tailored trim details around the soffit for a cleaner finish.
The Result
The completed kitchen feels brighter, more open, and easier to use from one task to the next. The warm white cabinets and walnut island create a balanced look, and the new countertop runs give the homeowners much more room to prep and serve. Every detail now feels intentional instead of pieced together.
