Project Overview
MB Millwork completed a kitchen design project in East Rutherford, NJ, for a 13' x 15' kitchen that needed a cleaner layout and more storage without changing the character of the home. We designed and installed shop-built custom cabinetry in a soft linen white, paired it with a 7'2" rift-cut white oak island, quartz countertops with subtle gray movement, and a full-height handmade ceramic backsplash behind the range. The finished kitchen now has better flow, deeper drawer storage, and a warmer, more finished feel from wall to wall.
The Problem
Before the redesign, the East Rutherford kitchen had aging maple cabinets, a tight prep zone between the sink and range, and a peninsula that made the room feel more closed off than it needed to be. The laminate counters showed wear around the sink and dishwasher, and the upper cabinets stopped below the ceiling, leaving unused space and a dated look. The homeowners wanted a brighter kitchen with better storage and a layout that made daily cooking easier.
The Challenge
The room had a soffit running along the refrigerator wall and a side entrance near the dining area, so cabinet sizing and island placement had to be planned carefully. The homeowners also wanted seating at the island without crowding the main walkway into the kitchen.
Our Solution
We started with a free 3D design consultation and mapped out a layout that improved storage while keeping the room open and comfortable to move through. Our shop fabricated the cabinetry in Lyndhurst with plywood construction, soft-close hardware, and painted shaker doors, while the white oak island added warmth, deep drawers, and a durable prep surface. We finished the space with quartz countertops, a full-height ceramic backsplash, and custom trim to make the soffit and wall transitions look intentional.
The Result
The completed kitchen feels brighter, more balanced, and much more usable day to day. The linen white cabinets keep the room light, the oak island gives it a clear centerpiece, and the new storage layout makes counters easier to keep clear. The finished details fit the room well, so the kitchen now looks built in instead of pieced together.
